Synopsis
Comprising Nietzsche's first book, The Birth of Tragedy, and one of his last books, The Case of Wagner, this 2-in-1 edition of Nietzsche's works presents the reader a comprehensive insight into Nietzsche's view of culture and aesthetics, as well as how his views evolved over time. The Birth of Tragedy discusses Greek culture in terms of the opposition between Apollo, seen by him as representing "high culture" , and Dionysius, seen as primal, raw, and honest. The Case of Wagner, on the other hand, is starkly different from The Birth of Tragedy and criticizes the works on his one-time friend, composer Richard Wagner. This edition, translated by Walter Kaufmann, who is seen as the best translator of Nietzsche, also includes selections of Nietzsche's letters and correspondences.
