From jacket flap:

Writing out of a deep and affectionate knowledge of Singapore, where he lived and worked as a journalist before World War II, Ronald McKie first presents a picture of that fascinating city in all its aspects: the teeming life of its almost 2 million people; its sighs and sounds and smells and its natural setting; its melange of races and religions; its exotic underworld of crime; its politics and its economics. Next he considers the future of Singapore as an independent entity and as a member of the Federation of Malaysia; he interviewed the key figures in government and public life, including the anti-Communist prime minister, the dedicated Communist who controls the city’s trade unions (and denies his affiliation), and the writer Han Suyin.

Mr. McKie follows with a report on Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malay, and discusses the problems of Greater Malaysia, “clamped between Indonesia, with the third strongest Communist Party in the world, and the mainland of Asia where Chinese and Chinese-aided Communism is slowly taking over”.

With the twilight of white colonialism, the issue in Southeast Asia, as Mr. McKie points out, likes between Asian Nationalism and Asian Communism. In this highly readable and informative book, he shows how and when the issue is likely to be joined.
