Eid Mubarak, or Selamat Hari Raya, to all Muslims!

May peace be upon everyone.

Here's a quote from the Quran, appropriate to a bookshop, to mark the end of Ramadan:

Read! In the Name of your Lord, Who has created,

Has created man from a clot.

Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous,

Who has taught (the writing) by the pen,

Has taught man that which he knew not.

- Surah Al-Alaq (The Clot) 96:1-4

Dear, Dear, Dilbert PDF Print E-mail

I love Dilbert. I love Dilbert.

Have I told you that I love Dilbert?

Dilbert was single-handedly responsible for the highlight of my most uneventful career.

One day, in the obscure office of an unknown company which shall remain anonymous (although mentioning it will strike no chord, ring no bell, and turn no head), I was asked to write The Mission Statement.

Because of my firm belief that mission statements are a reflection of sheer stupidity and writing them is an act of utter futility, I was at a loss. I suspect my boss was also at a loss, and rather desperate for inspiration, because nobody in the right frame of mind would ask me to come up with one in the first place.

Frustrated and slightly nauseated, I went straight to the Dilbert website and found God's gift to office workers - a Mission Statement Generator. You could click on it, and it would randomly generate sentence after sentence of gibberish of at least three syllables. Satisfied, I picked one and plunked it into a document and sent it to my boss.

Needless to say, he was quite impressed.

And thus, companies and mission statements are born.

The Emotional Thing PDF Print E-mail

In some ways, I'm a truly awful bookseller. I'm very happy when someone buys a book I really love - in my head I hear random judgements like "What great taste this person has!" (a testament to my own narcissism) or "Finally! Someone else likes this book!" (evidence of my need to fit in with the rest of society) or "This person will find this book awesome!" (my patronising desire to share goodness with the rest of the world). Underneath these neurotic voices, though, there is often a sense of bitterness at having to part with the book. I know I can always get another copy - and I will - but that's besides the point.

This happens often with Mikhail Bulgakov's books, such as A Dog's Heart and Master and Margarita. So imagine how thrilled I was to find the entire Master and Margarita movie on Youtube!
