Condition: Half-leather with boards, hardcover. Spine damaged and frayed. Spine title says “Egyptian Arts and Customs, 1934″, even though the book was published in 1909. It was probably rebound by a private collector in 1934. Interior very good, with clean pages and tight binding. 53 black-and-white plates and 180 in-text illustrations. 325pp., app 8.5″x5.5”.

This book, published by the British Museum, is essentially a history of ancient Egypt based on the artefacts held by the museum at the time, which numbered almost 50,000. With a preface by E A Wallis Budge, one of the most prominent Egyptologists of the time, this Guide is illustrated with 53 black-and-white plates, and a further 180 in-text illustrations. It contains pictures and descriptions of the Rosetta Stone, photos of Karnak and other archaeological sties, a guide to reading hieroglyphs and so on, but was published before important finds like the bust of Nefertiti (1912) and the tomb of Tutankhamun (1922).
