A thin book, but surprisingly comprehensive and specific in its description of Chinese theatre. It covers most aspects of the performance, such as the costumes, the music, and the acting, and also highlights a few regional types of theatre, namely, Peking opera, Kunshan opera, and Cantonese opera. The book also contains a list of popular plays and a short plot summary of each – this takes up about 60 pages or two-thirds of the book, and recounts episodes from classics such as The Three Kingdoms and Journey to the West, along with folk-tales or historical episodes. With some photographs and illustrations.
