Printed in Malaysia. Condition: Hardcover, cloth with dust jacket. Dust jacket has many tears and edgewear and some stains, plus some worm holes. Book itself is in good condition.

This book is an introduction to the wild life of Singapore and the neighbouring developed areas of Malaysia. To the tourist, the amateur naturalist or the newcomer to this part of the world, who is confronted by the bewildering variety and richness of a tropical fauna and flora, this booklet will serve as an invaluable guide.

The study of Biology cannot be confined to lecture rooms and text-books; to understand Nature, a student has to go out into the field, to the sea-shore, to streams and ponds, to the hills, vales and forests. The answers to many of the questions of the student and the observing resident of this country, can be found in this compact volume.

High-school pupils, beginning university students, schoolmasters and others should find this volume of value as a guide and reference work to the world of living things. Over-seas students will find in it a useful summary of the wild life of an equatorial area.

About the author:

Dr. Desmond S. Johnson joined the Zoology Department of the then University of Malaya in 1951. He rose through the ranks to becoming Professor in 1971 and then Reader of Zoology, an honour reserved for the foremost of zoologists. An active researcher on limnology as well as aquatic vertebrates and invertebrates (especially prawns), he published numerous papers on these areas, including the first critical reviews of local prawn and cladoceran species (water fleas), reef symbionts and peat fauna. His untimely death in England in 1971 while on a home visit cut short his contributions. Johnson was passionate about popularising science and published Natural History of Singapore in 1964 covering the flora and fauna of the island. It was so popular that it was reprinted as late as 1992.
