A travel book by French journalist Jacques Chegaray, who went to Bali in order to make a documentary film. In the course of his travels, Chegaray immersed himself in Balinese culture and uncovered the rites, rituals, taboos and beliefs that govern Balinese society. The book gives an overview of bull fights, life in the village, gamelan music, Balinese religion, married life, and other aspects of Balinese culture, usually closed off to tourists. Accompanying his descriptions are lovely black-and-white photographs. With a chapter each on Jakarta and Java.
