A collection of letters written by Frances Hubbard Flaherty, wife of acclaimed documentary film-maker Robert J. Flaherty, while in South India. During this time, the author accompanied her husband while he was filming the adventure story Elephant Boy, and makes for an exciting travelogue through the towns and jungles of Mysore. The book also contains some beautiful photographs of elephants and people.

Frances Hubbard Flaherty (December 5, 1883 – June 22, 1972) was married to acclaimed documentary filmmaker Robert J. Flaherty from 1914 until his death in 1951.
The couple had three children and remained married until Flaherty’s death in 1951. Frances worked alongside her husband on several of his films, including Louisiana Story (1948), for which she earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Story. She appeared in a feature-length documentary on her and her husband’s film work Hidden and Seeking (1971) directed by Peter Werner. She died on June 22, 1972, in Dummerston, Vermont.

Elephant Boy is a 1937 British adventure film starring Sabu in his film debut. Documentary filmmaker Robert J. Flaherty, who produced some of the Indian footage, and supervising director Zoltan Korda, who completed the film, won the Best Director Award at the Venice Film Festival. The film was made at the London Films studios at Denham, and in Mysore, India, and is based on the story “Toomai of the Elephants” from Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book (1894).
