This is the first edition of the English translation of the Ming/Qing Dynasty novel. It is loosely considered the sequel to Chin P’ing Mei but is also a famous novel in its own right.

About the author:

Yaokang Ding (丁耀亢, Wade-Giles : Ting Yao-kang), Chinese writer and dramatist (1599-1669) who lived in the late Ming – and the early Qing Dynasty, also used the pseudonyms Zeyang Daoren and Ye Hu.

Ding was born in Zhucheng in the province of Shandong and graduated at age 19 ‘Xiucai’ (Doctor of the first degree). After graduating, he traveled around in Southern China, socialized with famous intellectuals and founded with them a literary society. After returning home he wrote a historical work in ten volumes (Tianshi 天史). Later, he went to Beijing and was given dispensation to go up directly in the third and highest degree examination. Subsequently, he obtained a position as a teacher “under the banner white Manchurian”. Later he was appointed superintendent and finally to the Province. In the sixties he was afflicted by an eye disease.
