About the book:

A fascinating look at Soviet space science during the height of the Cold War.

From the forward:

The purpose of this handbook is to provide, in a single volume, a comprehensive and authoritative English-language summary of the first 10 years of Soviet space-science research. It is intended that this handbook service primarily as a reference tool for students, engineers, and scientists in space research having limited access to Soviet literature.

The handbook is divided into 5 major parts. Part I is essentially a directory of all rocket, satellite, and space-probe payloads launched in the USSR between October 1957 and December 1966. Scientific equipment and results associated with these launchings are summarized in Parts II and III. Part II is concerned with physical studies, where Part III treats biomedical investigations. Soviet activities associated with meteorological, geodetic, and communications satellites are described in Part IV. Part V treats the related topics of space tracking, manned space-station concepts, and attitudes concerning the existence of extraterrestrial life.
