From foreword by Lien Ying Chow, Chairman of the Preservation of Monuments Board:

“In 1972, the Preservation of Monuments Board commenced its work of identifying, inspecting and overseeing buildings that contributed to the architectural heritage of Singapore.

Priority for buildings to be preserved as national monuments was given at the outset to mosques, churches, temples and other institutions built by or associated with the early pioneers. The list of these gazetted monuments continues to grow. Two hotels of “Old World Charm” and tradition have now been added to the list. The Board also intends to recommend civic buildings and government offices after further study has been made of their merits.”
