A remarkable guide to Kashmir (Jammu, Kashmir & Ladakh), written in an era without motor access to most parts of the region. The author is incredibly detailed, instructing the reader even in matters such as the amount and types of food to be carried on the journey, the types of boots needed in the snowy terrain, and so on. Along with these instructions are descriptions of very specific parts of the region, including certain important villages, their populations, and the amenities to be found there. Many locales mentioned are so remote that there’s a chance this guide might still be useful today. The last chapters of the book are dedicated to hunting, and therefore provide a good summary of the animals in the area and their habits.
