A novel about an American businessman, Guillermo, who sets up a rice trading business in Manila. The story is a mix of romance and the events of life in the Philippines, when the country was still under Spanish rule. Although fiction, the book is rich in anecdotes of the city, jungle, and administration of the country, with descriptions of hunting in the jungle, entertainment, and the different communities living there at the time.
