A reference book of Malay sayings by a former lecturer in Malay, School of Oriental and African Studies. C. C. Brown also translated the Malay Annals (Sejarah Melayu) and published a number of other books on Malaya and the Malay language.
Some fun sayings, and their English equivalents:
Seperti anjing menyalak di-pantat gajah – Like dogs barking at the stern of an elephant. (An impotent threat.)
Seperti ular berbelit-belit – Like a snake rising above its coils. (To be furious. Quoted in Hang Tuah.)
Terong bertunang ikan kering – The egg-plant is betrothed to the dried fish. (Companions in misfortune. i.e., in the cooking pot.)
