A lovely little book containing Milton’s early poems, some having been translated from Latin and Italian by William Cowper. Includes poems such as “Comus”, the Psalms, and “Ode on the Nativity”. A tiny book that was published as a mass market edition that could easily be carried around and read on trains, etc., with the back cover and fly leaves covered with amusing and interesting advertisements. For example, the advertisement on the back cover promotes Nestle’s Swiss Milk, touted to “improve coffee, cocoa, and chocolate”, and “delicious in tea”. Advertisements also for mattresses, banking powder, “Gripe Water” and more.
