About the Book

Part of the Universal Classics Library, this wonderful collection of Ottoman Poetry contains some lesser-known works and is valuable in a world that has forgotten the once-prominent Ottoman Empire. Accompanying the poems are extensive biographical notes and a detailed explanation of the history and style of Ottoman poetry. The last few chapters of this collection contain poems from the Persia and Arabia, featuring the works of well-known poets like Hafiz, Sa’di and Rumi – and are thankfully not translated by Fitzgerald.
