About the book (from jacket flap):

The name of Pickering is a familiar one in Malaya, and particularly among the Chinese, to whom he was known as Pi-chi-lien. But little has hitherto been generally known of the man who supposed the driving force behind the establishment of the Chinese Protectorate and himself became the first Protector of Chinese.

Like many Victorians, Pickering is an excellent subject for a biography and the story of his life and work is a dramatic one.

The author of this study, R. N. Jackson, now Deputy Registrar of the University of Hong Kong, is especially qualified to write the life of Pickering since he was the last Englishman in the Central Government to hold a Chinese Affairs post.
