From jacket flap:

Much has been written about Malaya’s history but relatively little about its culture. Taman Indera is the first detailed study of Malay culture, as seen in the decorative arts and pastimes.

Following an introductory chapter, which outlines the development of civilization and culture in the Malay peninsula, the author devotes separate chapters to various aspects of the decorative arts and pastimes. Regalia and palaces; musical instruments; dance and drama; wedding ceremonies; dress; weapons; the art of self-defence; metal work, and the pastimes of kite-flying and top-spinning are all surveyed. The exceptionally fine illustrations- 83 in colour and 65 in black-and-white, and 35 line drawings – have been selected and laid out with much care so that they form an integral part of the text and add to the readers’ understanding and enjoyment of it.

Tan Sri Sheppard came to Malaya in 1928 and served in the Malayan Civil Service for 35 years. He held, among others, the appointments of Keeper of Public Records and Director of Museums.
