An engaging account of the author’s life in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where he was a representative of the US government helping to give aid to Saudi Arabia, working alongside the British government and Aramco. This light-hearted account does not describe the Shaffer’s work at all, but instead talks about daily life in Jeddah, as well as short trips to other parts of Saudi and the Middle East. In the course of the book Shaffer describes Ibn Saud’s visit to Jeddah and his subsequent meetings with Roosevelt, Churchill, and King Farouk in early 1945. Shaffer’s pet gazelle, Donald, also features prominently in this narrative, as do tours of the desert. Tragically, it appears Shaffer passed away in a plane crash from Beirut to Dahran in 1964, twelve years after this book was published.
