First published in 1853, this book describes the progress of European trade and conquest in the Malay peninsula. After an introductory chapter giving a general overview, the author discusses each region of the Malay peninsula individually, including its history and societal landscape. Chapter 2, for example, discusses the Malays – including those in Sumatra – with historical episodes such as the Malaccan Empire, the Portuguese, and so on. Likewise, he discusses Borneo, the Philippines, and the Dutch East Indies. All in all, a set that is very comprehensive in summarizing the histories of most parts of the Peninsula, along with the climate and trade of the region.
