Title: Tomimoto Toyohina, from an untitled series of famous beauties of Edo

Artist: Kitagawa Utamaro

Dimensions: app 15cm (w) by 25 cm (h), excluding mounting

Condition: Most definitely a woodblock print (not a digital reproduction), and most likely a later reproduction of Utamaro’s work, although this print itself must be fairly old. Condition is fair, with slight foxing, especially to the top of the paper and a dent in the middle.

Kitagawa Utamaro (c. 1753 – 31 October 1806) was a Japanese artist. He is one of the most highly regarded designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings, and is best known for his bijin ōkubi-e “large-headed pictures of beautiful women” of the 1790s. He also produced nature studies, particularly illustrated books of insects.
